The human body was intended to be active. This means a lot of movement. You can move more efficiently when you have a limber, flexible body that promotes balance, mobility and independence. This is possible when you stretch regularly.

Stretching is not just for athletes, dancers and contortionists. A regular practice of stretching helps keep anyone limber, flexible and balanced. The human body naturally loses its ability to stretch as human beings age, so a smart stretching regimen makes a lot of sense for everyone, but in particular for anyone over 50 years of age. Mobility, independence and self-esteem are all boosted when a senior citizen stretches regularly.

A good stretching practice takes place in the morning when you first get out of bed, and again in the evening. This helps prepare your body for normal, day-to-day activities which require physical exertion. 

Children should be exposed to a smart and healthy stretching plan at a very young age, and a yoga practice can also benefit children. While in the past keeping kids from stretching was a popular notion, we now know that children at all ages can benefit from keeping their muscles, tendons and ligaments limber and flexible. This is true whether those children decide to play sports, or have no intention of engaging in organized or casual physical activities.

A healthy stretching practice for children can instill positive lifelong physical fitness habits that lead to overall health and well-being. Even if your child does not decide to engage in organized sports, kids are running around, playing and staying active all the time. It just makes sense to give your child the best chance at minimizing injury from physical movement and activity, while also increasing physical performance that leads to high levels of self-esteem and self-belief.

Obviously all adults, including senior citizens and the elderly, can improve their standard of living and enjoyment of life by stretching regularly. Whether you are a man or a woman, young or old, you can benefit from a regular stretching practice.
